Things to Do

The world’s second longest barrier reef lays just a 10-minute boat ride from the island. World-class snorkeling, 1, 2 and 3-tanks dives, and marine observation tours to the reef, the marine reserves, the Blue Hole, and other islands can be arranged on short notice with local, professional guides. The PADI Open Water 4-day course is available at very reasonable rates.

Other water-related activities include: windsurfing, kayaking, fishing (troll and fly), sailing, swimming at “the split” and off the docks, and checking each evening for the “catch of the day.”

Tours to Mayan ruins (Tikal, Lamanai, Altun Ha, Caracol, Xunantunch, etc.) are also offered.

You can hike through the nature reserve where the flora is labeled, and watch exotic birds and butterflies in their tropical paradise.

Walk, jog, or ride a bike along the public shoreline and under the mangrove canopy.

Stop in at the local artists’ galleries or shop the many small unique gift shops.

Sip freshly squeezed fruit juices, or enjoy a latte, or an ice cream cone. Explore the variety of the local cuisine and treat yourself to exquisitely prepared fresh fish and lobster (during the season) at your ocean-side table.

Drop in for happy hour at your favorite (sand-floored) bar where local drinks and dishes are served in generous portions at extremely affordable prices.

Swim and snorkel with the kids, or watch them at the beachside playground and basketball court.

Or relax on the beach or a dock, or in a hammock, and do none of the above, if that is your desire.

Wherever you are, COME, find your own paradise, as others have.
